Stand Up: Three Social Movements

Problem System

Develop three posters that persuade viewers to attend a series of events. Each poster will communicate the meaning of a person’s work contribution with the manipulation and arrangement of typography and image.

Concept Statement

Common themes among the three groups, “Black Lives Matter”, “Chibok’s Bring Back Our Girls”, and “Madres de Plaza de Mayo” include hardship, hurt, distress, and disarray. The latter two were the focus of the compositions of the posters. I displayed this by ripping and crumbling the materials during free play.

Free Play

With my concept in mind, I printed key words and phrases that I wanted to appear on the posters. I proceeded to rip, crumble, and smudge.

Iterations

I designed the background text to appear as if struggling to be seen, with distressed letters reflecting the key theme.

Moving from iteration one to two, I knew I wanted to maintain the same idea, but using photoshop, I could have more control of placement, and look less like paper.

I was advised to incorporate more asymmetrical balance and to explore space beyond the center and corners..

I took the project to Photoshop and included rips in the text, and strips of yellow to emulate the yellow that is typically correlated to the Black Lives Matter Movement.

I was advised to simplify, especially the "Say Their Names" freeplay, which had become illegible. Moving forward, I aimed to focus on distress rather than excessive manipulation.

I inverted the colors to connect all three posters. And I made the background texture less busy.

I proceeded with the same techniques.

The "Kidnapped" free play was too busy and the background text too prominent. I reduced the background text's opacity and tried again to achieve asymmetrical balance.

To create more cohesion between all three posters, I inverted the colors. I also made the background texture less prominent and blended the primary “Silence” more.
